Roundworms Ascariasis
Improper fertilization (faecal fertilization) can contaminate fruit and vegetables with roundworm eggs.
People infected with it excrete these very resistant eggs through the stool and are thus contagious.
Ascariasis is an infestation of the intestine with Ascaris lumbricoides, also called roundworm.
Around 760 million to 1,4 billion people worldwide are infected with this worm. The risk areas include mainly East Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Male roundworms grow up to 25 centimeters, female even up to 40 centimeters.
Although roundworms can usually feed in several organisms, they only reproduce in their ultimate host.
roundworm | Main host |
Ascaris lumbricoides | Man |
Ascaris suum | Pig |
Ascaris marina | sea animals |
Ascaris canis | Dog |
Ascaris cati | cat |
An infection from person to person is impossible in a roundworm, because the worm's eggs first have to mature outside the body in a warm and humid environment of approx. 30 degrees before they become infectious.
If these eggs are then consumed after about two to six weeks of ripening due to contaminated food, these larvae can hatch in the small intestine and infect humans.
First, they pierce the wall of the small intestine and thus reach the liver via the intestinal veins.
After another five to ten days, they continue to migrate along the bloodstream via the right heart to the lungs.
When they are around a week old, they break through the blood vessels and settle in the alveoli. There they shed their skin and crawl up the bronchi and trachea towards the throat.
There they irritate the mucous membrane and trigger a swallowing reflex. Humans swallow the young worms and transport them through the esophagus to the stomach and ultimately back to the small intestine.
This is where the worms become sexually capable and produce their first eggs approx. 70 days after they entered the human organism for the first time.
Usually the infection is symptom-free. Symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, asthma-like symptoms, Löffler syndrome with eosinophilic lung infiltrates can occur.
These complaints are the result of the larvae migrating into the lungs.
7-9 weeks after the initial infection, worms can be detected in the stool for the first time.
If you visualize the path of the larvae in the body, the symptoms become clear:
Migration of the larvae in the blood and lungs:
- Granulocytes in the blood increase
- cough
- bronchitis
- Sometimes fever too
- Allergic reactions to the metabolic products of worms
Continuation of worms in the intestine:
- Upper abdominal discomfort
- Diarrhea or constipation or alternating
- anorexia
- sleep disorders
- nervousness
complications
- Occlusion of the small intestine, the bile ducts, the pancreas or the appendix with balls of worms
- Intestinal obstruction (possibly fatal)
- Inflammation of the pancreas or bile ducts
