If too little oxygen is supplied to the brain at this altitude, the brain produces more PROSTAGLANDIN E2 in order to expand the vessels and thus to be able to supply more oxygen to the brain. Causes first symptoms of altitude sickness, namely headache.
Adding oxygen will reduce the release of prostaglandin E2 and reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness.
The aim of this research project was to compare the behavior of volunteers who receive oxygen to those who actually inhaled the clean air.
All volunteers, whether supplied with oxygen or ambient air, had the same result. Prostaglandin E2 sank in the body and the headache disappeared. Even in the stress test, those subjects were equally fit with the natural ambient air as those subjects who received pure oxygen.
